Why Was The Bruneian Hostel in Singapore Left Abandoned & Not Demolished: Tanglin Hill Brunei Hostel

Updated: May 1

I've managed to witness one of the abandoned buildings left in Singapore, which also does not owned by the Singapore Government, the abandoned Brunei Hostel in Singapore.

Here's a brief background about the hostel: Back in the 50s, Brunei didn’t have any proper education system. They’ve then decided to send their top students to study abroad, and Singapore was one them.

As the number of students that’s being sent to Singapore for education increases, the Brunei government have decided to purchase a piece of land in Tanglin Hill to build accommodation for the convenience of its students.

The hostel eventually opened in 1958 and was known as Asrama Kerajaan Brunei di Singapura (AKBS), also known as Tanglin (Hill) Brunei Hostel.

By the 80s, Brunei has started to develop its own education system. Therefore, the number of students that were sent overseas for secondary education gradually declined. With lesser Bruneian students coming to Singapore for study, the Bruneian government decided to close the hostel in 1983 and was left abandoned ever since.
